Scott Dawson - "Headed to the Lake"

Review by Abby Kenna

“Headed to the Lake” by Scott Dawson is a charming country tune bound to draw listeners in with its playful tone and anecdotal lyricism. Dawson’s songwriting infuses “Headed to the Lake” with infectious character and a story-telling personality akin to The Beatles’ “Rocky Raccoon” or Charlie Daniels’ “The Devil Went Down to Georgia”. The song grabs hold of listeners and guides them through a lighthearted tale dusted with mischievous moments of tongue-in-cheek lyricism:

“Can we make amends

And get back to kissing?

Should I pucker up

Or just go fishing?”

Although music often tells a story, “Headed to the Lake” is an entire adventure. It’s hard not to picture the song being sung around a campfire with a group of giddy friends, smiling and laughing. Dawson commits to the character of this animated country song in every possible way, leaning into the instrumental spirit, dynamic arrangement, and bold lyrics.

Scott Dawson utilizes a wide range of instruments and dynamics to further create contrast within this story. Complete with an enthusiastic guitar and a bouncy beat, “Headed to the Lake” is full of energy from the start. The verses cleverly shift the focus between different instruments as the story unfolds, beginning with the spright soloing of a guitar beneath the introductory verse. A jovial fiddle adds a light, lilting melody to the chorus, floating around the refrain with buoyant, bright tones. Transitioning into the second verse, a rich piano with a walking bass line takes center stage for a more stripped-down sound. Dawson’s narrative lyrics shine in this section, as the moment of minimal production allows his playful tone to be highlighted:

“Now I admit

It wasn't funny

When I joked you burnt the toast…

If I beg and plead

Will you forgive me, honey?”

“Headed to the Lake” is witty and full of intoxicating cheer. The lively country song is cleverly arranged to tell Scott Dawson’s fun-loving story, and listeners are sure to be singing along in no time.
